The area of a sand filter is measured as the top of the sand. The area of a pleated cartridge filter is usually taken from the manufacturer's specification on the top cap. The area of a D.E. filter is the total surface area of all of the grids that the water flows through. |

Filter Area is very much related to the manufacturer's specification for the amount of water flow through the filter in question. These specifications are governed by standards as established by the National Sanitation Foundation International (NSFI).
